Counseling for ADD ADHD
Our Clinical Director and President here at ADD-Products.com
is Douglas Cowan, Psy.D., a licensed Family Therapist for, well, for
a lot of years (he's really old). Anyway Dr. Cowan says that counseling
for ADD ADHD can be a waste of money, a lot of money, unless the counselor
knows what he or she is doing.
Dr. Cowan's main points...
If your child is using medications, he should also
be in counseling;
The focus of counseling should be on SKILLS that
lead to SUCCESS. That's success in the classroom, success with peers,
success in sports or hobbies;
Self-esteem without self-control is a bad thing (let
that sink in).
Really, self-control and good manners can go a long
way in life;
Self-esteem, or self-confidence, is only the result
of achievement.
Having more successes than failures in life leads
to confidence.
Self-esteem without achievement is probably only
self-centeredness or arrogance.
You must teach your children how to be successful.
Insight oriented therapy is not effective.
Skill oriented therapy (behavioral interventions
and cognitive interventions) is better.
Counseling for ADD ADHD children does not have to
go on and on for years. Your counselor is going to have taught your
child everything that he or she knows within six months. Unless there's
a crisis underway, counseling beyond that is probably just a transfer
of wealth from you to the therapist.
Try
ATTEND for four months. It costs about the same as three counseling
appointments.
